Law of Karma
The law of Karma (Sanskrit) or Kamma (Pali) originated in the Vedic system of religion, otherwise known as Hinduism. The term traces back to the early Upanishads, around 1500 BCE. In its major conception, karma is the physical, mental and suprarenal system of neutral rebound, cause and effect that is inherent in existence within the bounds of time, space, and causation. Essentially what this means is that the very being which one experiences (say, as a human being) is an immutable preservation of energy, vibration, and action. It is comparable to the Golden Rule but denies the ostensible arbitrariness of Fate, Destiny, Kismet, or other such Western conceptions by attributing absolute reason and determinism to the workings of the cosmos. Karma, for these reasons, naturally implies reincarnation since thoughts and deeds in past lives will affect one's current situation. Thus, humanity (through a sort of collective karma) and individuals alike are responsible for the tragedies and good 'fortunes' that they experience. The concept of an inscrutable God figure is not necessary with the idea of karma. It is vital to note that karma is not an instrument of a god, or a single God, but is rather the physical and spiritual 'physics' of being. As gravity governs the motions of heavenly bodies and objects on the surface of the earth, karma governs the motions and happenings of life, inanimate and animate, unconscious and conscious, in the cosmic realm. Thus, what certain philosophical viewpoints may term destiny or fate is in actuality, according to the laws of karma, the simple and neutral working out of karma. Many have likened karma to a moral banking system, a credit and debit of good and bad. However, this view falls short of the idea that any sort of action (action being a root meaning of 'karma'), whether we term it 'good' or 'bad', binds us in recurring cause and effect. In order to attain supreme consciousness, to escape the cycle of life, death, and rebirth and the knot of karma one must altogether transcend karma. This method of transcendence in many streams of not only Hinduism and Buddhism, but other faiths and philosophical systems as well.
Poker Chinese
Chinese 13 Card Poker
Chinese Poker is played with a standard 52-card
deck. Up to four players can play.
Each poker player receives 13 cards, face down, one at a time, in rotation. A hand is
dealt to all four positions even if vacant. The hand must be arranged with three
cards in front, five cards in the middle, and five cards in the back, where the
back hand should rank higher or equal to the middle hand, and the middle hand
should rank higher than the front hand. Standard poker rankings apply. Straights
and flushes do not count in the front hand except in the event of an automatic
win.
Scores are kept by points. Each part of the hand is assigned one point. Each
point is given a monetary value for each game.
Hands are then compared with each player, one at a time. The poker player with the
higher ranking hand in the front segment wins one point. The player with the
higher ranking middle hand wins one point. The player with the higher ranking
back hand wins one point.
If two out of three of the players' hands ranks higher than an opponent's hand,
the first player wins two points. For example, the player would win two points,
minus one point (the one an opponent won) plus one point for a majority of
segments win, thereby, winning two points total.
If all three parts of the player's hand ranks higher than the opponent's hand,
the winner gets four points. (The player wins three points (net win), one point
for winning each of the three hands minus zero points (the opponent didn't win
any) plus one point for the majority of hands won, totaling four points.)
Automatic Win
There are also hands known as an "automatic win" and the player may declare the win by placing the stack of cards down on the table. However, the player must declare the automatic win before the hands are opened, otherwise the hands will play the way the player sets. The automatic win hands are as follows:
- The Dragon Hand: Ace through King of any suit. This hand beats all other automatic win hands.
- Any 13-card hand that has six pairs. Note that four-of-a-kind can be counted as two pairs.
- Any 13-card hand that has suited cards in all three parts.
- Any 13-card hand that has straights in all three parts.
A Straight Flush can be used as a Straight or a Flush for bonus hands.
Improperly Set Hands
A hand is set improperly if: Any part of the three segment hands has the wrong number of cards; or, any part of the three segment hands are set out of ranking order. Any player that sets his or her hand improperly must pay four points to all of the other players.
Eastern, Western and Mandarin Bonus Points Variations
Eastern Version point awarding Variation: The play of
the poker game is the same as 13 Card Poker. In addition to the basic point system as
in 13 Card Poker, bonus systems of awarding points is used for making certain
hands in the front, middle and back positions. In addition to the basic point
system, points can be earned on bonus hands as follows: (a) Bonus point hands in
the back: (1) straight flush-five (5) points; (2) Four of a kind- four (4)
points. (b) Bonus point hand in the middle: (1) straight flush - then (10)
points; (2) Four of a kind - eight (8) points; (3) Full house - two (2) points.
(c) Bonus point hands in the front: (1) Three of a kind - three (3) points. If a
player wins two out of three hands, the player is awarded two points for their
winning hands and loses one point to his opponent for a total of one point from
that opponent. When a bonus hand is involved, the winning hand earns only the
bonus hand points.
Western Version point awarding Variation: The play of the poker game is the
same as 13 Card Poker. In addition to the basic point system, this point system
awards one additional point to the poker player who wins the majority of hands. If a
player beats his opponent two out of three hands, they receive a total of two
points for their winning hands.
Mandarin Version point awarding Variation: The play of the game is the
same as 13 Card Poker with opportunities to earn extra points. A player earns
one point for each winning hand as in 13 Card Poker. Three of a kind in the
front hand triples the point value. A bonus can be received which awards
additional points for making certain hands in the front, middle and back
positions. If a bonus hand is present, the points for that bonus hand are then
added on. Two special bonus situations can occur, the "shot" and the "home run."
A "shot" situation occurs when a player wins all three hands against an
opponent. The regular point value for each hand is doubles and added to the
total. A "home run" situation occurs, only in a four-handed game, when a player
wins all three hands on the showdown against all three of their opponents. The
regular point value for each hand is tripled and added to the total.

When the Stakes Turn Toxic
Anyone who’s bought a lottery ticket or played bingo has gambled. Gambling is any game of chance in which money changes hands. It’s common in most cultures around the world. Many people enjoy gambling as recreation without causing harm to themselves or others. Yet some people can’t control their impulse to gamble, even when it takes a terrible toll on their lives.
For these gamblers and their families, researchers have been making progress in several areas. Scientists are learning why people have problems with gambling: how common it is, what goes on inside the gambler’s brain, which is at risk and what kinds of treatment can help.
Problem gambling is defined by some researchers as gambling that causes harm to the gambler or someone else, in spite of a desire to stop. Between 2% and 4% of Americans struggle with this condition. Problem gambling can progress to a recognized psychiatric diagnosis called pathological gambling.
Pathological gambling may affect from 0.4% to 2% of Americans. “Pathological gambling comes with a constellation of problems that contribute to chaos,” says Dr. Donald Black of the University of Iowa. “It’s associated with worse physical health, excessive smoking, excessive drinking, not exercising, not seeing primary care doctors and worse dental care. It also fuels depression, family dysfunction, crime, bankruptcy and suicide.”
Together, pathological and problem gambling may affect up to 5% of Americans. That number may rise, though. Laws in many states are creating more options for legal gambling, and internet gambling is becoming more common.
Still, gambling is often done in family settings, condoned or encouraged by parents. And the younger you start, the more likely you are to get into trouble later on. From 3% to 8% of adolescents have a problem with gambling.
Dr. John Welte of the University of Buffalo has found that, across the lifespan, gambling problems are even more common than alcohol dependence. They are also much more common in males, in young people, and in people who live in relatively poor neighborhoods. “That’s not true of the prevalence of alcoholism,” says Welte. “Alcoholism is much more democratic. So think about motives for gambling. People are hoping that winning will improve their lot. That makes them more vulnerable to developing a gambling problem.”
In a study of mostly African-American inner-city youth, Dr. Silvia Martins of Johns Hopkins University has found that about 15% have some form of problem gambling. Most at-risk were adolescents and young adults who began showing symptoms of depression at age 12. They were highly impulsive, although not hyperactive or aggressive. As the African-American boys developed into their teens and early adulthood, gambling appeared to be a separate risk factor for early fatherhood and criminal arrest.
“We are following up with these inner-city kids every single year as they enter adulthood,” says Martins.
But why is gambling irresistible to some folks and not others? Using advanced imaging techniques, Dr. Alexander Neumeister of Mount Sinai School of Medicine looked at the brains of people with gambling problems and alcohol problems. He measured the number of special receptors involved in regulating impulse control and other factors.
“A key feature of addiction is impaired impulse control,” says Neumeister. “Abnormal function of the forebrain leads to reduced tolerance to waiting.” The resulting impatience may cause people to act without considering the consequences. “Our imaging clearly points toward the importance of impaired forebrain function in addiction.”
Pinpointing areas in the brain’s reward center, Neumeister’s team found that people with alcohol addiction and gambling problems show different functioning of these special receptors compared to healthy people. The differences were related to the severity of addiction. Other researchers are trying to develop drugs that could treat the affected areas.
Talk therapy can also help. Dr. Nancy Petry at the University of Connecticut Health Center works with pathological gamblers and people seeking treatment for drug use disorders. Gambling problems arise in about 10% to 20% of substance abusers. Petry compared the use of different types of talk therapy, including very brief interventions and cognitive-behavioral therapy CBT. CBT teaches people how to think differently about problems and then act on that knowledge.
“We found very brief interventions and CBT were effective in reducing gambling and gambling-related problems,” Petry says. “There was a significant improvement relative to usual care or standard forms of treatment like Gamblers Anonymous [a 12-step program].”
Anybody can have a gambling problem, and no one should feel ashamed or be afraid to seek treatment. “Pathological gambling is a medical disorder, not a sin or a vice,” says Dr. Carlos Blanco of Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. “There is no stereotype. The main predictor of outcome is really motivation.”
In other words, what counts most is a strong drive or desire to take action. Blanco offers gamblers motivational interviewing, which helps them explore their mixed feelings about trying to quit gambling. This primes them to be ready and willing to begin CBT. Using both therapies together can be very effective.
